A popular way of telling the time since they were first developed in Italy towards the end of the 15th century, pocket watches quickly became an everyday item.   Whilst they were once the most common way of telling the time for many gentlemen, the advent of the wristwatch saw pocket watches become less commonplace. However, whilst they were not seen as often beyond the World War I, this did not affect their desirability. Instead, pocket watches became more of a fashion item - reserved for special occasions and formal wear. This desirability continues today.
